United Way 211 number offers help
ALPENA, Mich. — In emergencies, we know to dial 911. But did you know there’s another number that can help you?
Whether you need help with rent, substance abuse, finding food, or something else, United Way says you can dial 211. Operators will listen to your problem and search their database for groups that can help.
Joe Gentry, Executive Director for the local United Way, said not enough people know about the number.
“We get calls here at the office- two or three a week. People want direct service help and they don’t know where to go. We always say ‘have you tried 211?’ and the answer is ‘what’s that?'”
