Underwater photographer gears up to explore Lake Huron above and below the surface

Jennifer Idol poses with her book "An American Immersion" before she boards the Lady Michigan.

Alpena — She’s one of the top underwater photographers in the nation and she is spending the week in Alpena, capturing photographs above and below the surface.

Jennifer Idol has explored all 50 states through diving and became the first woman to dive in each state. She put together her photographs from each state in a book entitled, “An American Immersion.” Idol enjoys diving in the Great Lakes for it’s preserving qualities of shipwrecks.

“The wrecks in the Great Lakes are extremely special because of the cold and fresh water that helps preserve them,” said Idol. “You can see wooden wrecks which I find particularly amazing.”

Idol will be in town all week, snapping photographs in the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, aboard the Lady Michigan, and under the surface at the shipwrecks W.P. Rend, E.B. Allen, and the Joseph S. Fay. She will assemble her photographs for a presentation on Thursday evening at the Heritage Center.

The presentation entitled “Discover Michigan Waters” kicks off at 6:00pm. The event is free and open to the public. For more information click the link here.
