Tunnel 2 Towers Fundraisers Continue Throughout Alpena

Alpena’s biggest race, tunnel to towers will be hosting a fundraiser on Friday. The fundraiser helps benefit the cost to continue to national 5k race here in Alpena, along with raising funds for the national campaign.

Friday’s fundraiser will be held at Chief’s Bar on 2nd Avenue from 5 pm until 9 pm. The upcoming 5k will be held this year on Saturday, September 16th.

This will be the second time that Alpena participates in the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers event. The continued support not only helps with the 5k race it helps build custom designed smart homes for injured service members.

Alpena’s first hero to receive a smart home last year was Ben Eberle.

“The more fundraisers we can do, the more money we raise the more houses can be built for the catastrophic service members. Alpena’s huge to the point they help out with everything so having this fundraiser brings everyone together and shows how strong Alpena is,” Melanie Smith, Co-Chair of the fundraiser said.

Tunnel to Towers Foundation was started after September 11th in honor of fire fighter, Stephen Siller. Siller dedicated his life to others when the twin towers at the world trade center fell to the ground.

This year the Alpena committee has more family activities planned including a petting zoo, and face painting during the race. The current goal is to hopefully get more military participants on the day of the 5k, September 16th.

There were over 500 participants in last years race here in Alpena.
