ALPENA, Mich.– For residents of Alpena, the time to recycle your used or damaged tires is almost over.

Thanks to a grant from the state of Michigan, the Alpena Resource Recovery Facility has been able to accept tires from businesses and households for about ten years. The tire acceptance period runs from May to October, ending on November 1. People are allowed to drop off up to ten tires for free, with every tire after that costing a $2.00 fee.

Stanley Mischley, manager at the facility, says proper tire disposal is important for the environment.

“Reason number one is it keeps the tires out of the ditches. People like to throw tires in the woods. They like to just, throw them wherever they can throw them. This way all the tires are cleaned up.”

Mischley advises that you call ahead and make an appointment if you plan on dropping off a large number of tires.
