Tips to keep your home safe during the holidays

ALPENA, Mich. – Christmas lights, candles and extra extension cords are just some of the items we tend to buy during the holidays.

That’s why state and local fire fighters are urging residents to pay extra attention to electrical safety indoors this holiday season, a time typically more prone to residential and electrical fires. According to the Michigan Fire Inspectors Society COVID–19 is also playing a role in holiday fire occurrences this year.

The pandemic has increased the number of people staying inside for work and school, increasing the use of various electrical devices, charging stations and straining access to residential electrical systems.

MFIS said statistics suggest a need for caution and are asking all residents to follow simple tips to protect themselves during the holidays.
The organization believes many residential fires and electrical incidents could be prevented by following a few simple precautions.

*Inspect all electric cords and strings of holiday lights for signs of damage or wear and tear.
*When using appliances, inspect them for signs of damage.
*Also, make sure to comply with national safety standards and research additional safety protections for appliances.
