ALPENA, Mich.– As it gets dark earlier, drivers should make sure to keep their eyes open for deer.

Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA, says over 43% of deer crashes in Michigan happen between October and December.

Here in Alpena, drivers may be used to the sight of deer, but collisions are still possible. Brian Plowman, an associate at plowman’s collision, told WBKB a surprising number of deer collisions happen in an unexpected place: Midmichigan Health!

“We have had a couple over the last probably two years. Right down in front of the hospital,” Plowman said.

Plowman said deer collisions can cause up to tens of thousands of dollars in damage. If you hit a deer or other animal, Plowman said to pull over and check your car.

“Pull over, take a look at your car. Make sure you don’t have a radiator leaking fluid all over and potentially burning out motors. Things like that.”

AAA said motorists should follow five tips to avoid deer collisions.

First, stay awake and sober.

Second, always wear your seatbelt.

Third, stay alert at dawn and dusk.

Fourth, slow down when you see a deer. It means there’s probably more around.

And fifth: if you can’t avoid a crash, don’t swerve! Keep your hands on the wheel, stay in your lane, and use your brakes until the car comes to a controlled stop.
