Tigers claw past Snowbirds in district semifinal

Hillman defeats Gaylord St. Mary 3-1 to advance to the district final against Posen. (October 31, 2018)

ATLANTA — The Hillman Tigers battled the Gaylord St. Mary Snowbirds for the district semifinal. The playoff match was determined by the team that made the least amount of mistakes. Brooke Jones served up a 7-0 run to help the Tigers power past the Snowbirds 25-11 in the first set. Jones led the team with three aces.

Hillman struggled in the second set, but came back in the third. Senior setter Alison Samp served up a sizable lead and with a stronger performance at the net, the Tigers took set three 25 to 10.

The orange and black started off slow in set four, but made a comeback. Jones slams the match-point kill and Hillman wins 25 to 23, taking the game 3-1.

“It felt pretty good, but I couldn’t do it without my team,” said Jones. “It just feels pretty good that we are all working together and slamming the ball hard.”

Jones led the team with 43 digs, Samp contributed 24 assists and Anna Callender slammed down ten kills.

Hillman and Posen face off on Friday at 5 p.m. for the district final.
