The Wildcats nearly comeback against Manistique but lose fifth straight game 2-3

ALPENA, MI – The Alpena Wildcats hockey team’s season has taken a massive hit recently. After their loss to Petoskey on Friday, the Wildcats have now lost four straight games moving them to 9–8 on the year. On Saturday the team had another non-conference match, which tends to be an issue for Alpena. Most of the Wildcats losses this year came from non-conference opponents so the Wildcats would try to make this game an exception against Manistique.

In between periods we saw multiple Alpena High School Hockey Alumni recognized from generations before and after the 2000’s. Getting into the game, Manistique with possession in the first period. A great pass finds Gavin Nutkins who takes a one touch shot and scores. Manistique gets the opening goal to go up 1–0.

Second period now. Alpena with a power play, but Manistique has a breakaway. Cameron Skeans skates up and fires a shot, the puck goes over the keeper and was it a save or a goal? The refs determine it went in, so it’s another goal for Manistique, this time shorthanded. Aalpena now trails 2–0.

Third period now. Manistique short handed again but it doesn’t matter. Cameron Skeans once again with a breakaway. Only one man to beat as he takes a wrister and scores. That’s number two on the day for Skeans and it’s 3–0 Manistique.

Alpena would have trouble scoring all night due to Manistique goalie Alex Noble having an outstanding day. However, with just under two and a half minutes to go, Alpena finally broke through and got a goal courtesy of Cam Young.

Now Alpena with a two man advantage power play with just under a minute to go. One shot from the Wildcats doesn’t go but, with the putback goal, it’s Harrison Kaszubowski who scores. That’s his first varsity goal and with almost 40 seconds remaining, the Wildcats only trail by one.

Alpena nearly pulled off a wild comeback but there just wasn’t enough time left on the clock. Manistique gets the win as Alpena suffers their fifth straight loss with the final score of 2–3. Now with an even 9–9 record, the Wildcats will hope to get things sorted Friday when they have a home rematch against the Petoskey Northmen.
