Tawas Football looking to rebound after 2020 season

Tawas, Mich. — The Tawas Braves are looking to surprise some people in their second season under Head Coach Aaron Hazen.

Last season, in Hazen’s first year, the Braves had a bit of a learning curve. Their record didn’t scream success, but Tawas has learned from their mistakes and gotten better, and they’re ready to show the world the new and improved Braves.

“We didn’t know what we didn’t know,” said Coach Hazen. “We went 0-7, but we also learned from our mistakes, we’ve simplified things, made things easier for kids to understand. And we’ve become more focused as a team.”

“I’m pretty excited,” said Evan Mochty, a Tawas senior. “We’ve been practicing very very hard, and I’d say we have a little bit of an advantage right now coming off of an underdog story. I’m pretty stoked.” Teammate Jack Busch agrees.

“Last season left a  bad taste in our mouth,” said Busch. “I think we’re all ready to get out on the field and prove some people wrong.”

For the Braves this year, improvement isn’t going to be overnight. Hazen and the kids know this, and they’re just looking to get better and take things one week at a time.

“We’re going to go out there and focus one game at a time,” said senior Lukas Herrick. “We’re going week by week and just punch’em in the face. Get ready to go.”

“We’re taking it week by week,” said Granite Barringer. “Hopefully win some games and make it to the playoffs.”

While Coach Hazen has a year under his belt- the experience factor is even bigger with the kids. The Braves have just under ten seniors who have been playing together since grade school. The team says that through their experiences together, they’ve built some chemistry.

“Last year, we didn’t really have any leadership,” Mochty said. “This year a lot of guys have stepped up. It’s just been a better year all over.”

“We have better team chemistry,” Busch said. “All the guys really work well together. We have good leadership and we really hold each other accountable.”
