Superintendent explains sink cost

ALPENA, Mich. — Some Alpena parents have expressed frustration with the $46,000 price tag for sink installation at Ella White. We talked to the superintendent to learn where the money’s going.

Superintendent David Rabbideau said only half of Ella White’s 12 classrooms have a sink.

As part of the school’s ongoing renovations, the board decided to retrofit a specialty sink into those six classrooms.

Rabbideau said the sinks themselves are relatively cheap.

The majority of the expense comes from installation.

“They’re drilling through either walls or floors. [They’re] going down into the tunnels that run under the building. And so that’s 240 feet of two-inch sanitary piping and 480 feet of half-inch domestic water [pipes].”

Rabbideau says these sinks will make cleanup easier after messy projects, both for teachers and students.
