Students from Ella White Elementary clean up Starlite Beach before the end of the school year

Students from Ella White Elementary are mixing work and play in Alpena, using their skills to construct sand castles and nurture the environment.

Mrs. Suchey and Mrs. McInerney’s fifth grade classes started their day at Starlite Beach by putting their math and science skills to work.

“There’s a lot that goes into designing a castle. They have to look at space. They have to use area, perimeter, design, and I hope a few fraction skills in there too.”

After the kids got their hands dirty in the sand, they switched gears for their clean up portion of the visit. Mrs. McInerney says the kids have committed to keeping the environment clean. With this project, they’re building on what they already started.

“We have project lists that we came up with and the kids have been really great about keeping it clean. They created a sign up sheet and they have different parents going each week to clean the park. So today, we’re just adding to that and we’re going to clean up Starlite Park.”

The kids are looking forward to continuing to take care of their environment, and taking their skills to junior high this fall.
