Sticky This Weekend; Some Relief Monday

Temperatures this afternoon warmed to 90 degrees in Alpena with abundant sunshine and a northwest breeze. A land breeze (out of the northwest, west or southwest) contributes to the warm temperatures because land heats faster than water — compared to when a lake breeze develops, the breeze off the lake keeps temperatures cooler. Temperatures observed at 5 p.m. are shown below.

A high pressure system over Ohio is brightening the skies over most of Michigan. Winds out of the south will keep the heat going into tomorrow. A warm front currently to our west will gradually move towards our area, increasing the temperatures and the humidity this weekend.

By tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in the upper 60s with mostly sunny skies. The high will heat up to 90 degrees in the afternoon under partly cloudy skies and a breeze out of the south about 10 mph. Even during the evening, temperatures will feel toasty, close to 80 degrees.

The Long Lake Lights Festival is happening this Saturday. The triathlon starts at 9 a.m., as temperatures will already warm into the upper 70s. Spectators and triathlon participants should keep well hydrated, wear light and loose-fitting clothing, and stay protected from the sun by wearing sunglasses and applying sunscreen. Saturday will be hot and humid, high temperatures will soar into the mid-90s.

For tomorrow, sunshine and a southerly breeze will contribute to warming temperatures, getting close to the 90 degree mark. Humidity levels will be highest this weekend, and temperatures will heat up to the mid-90s on Saturday, and near 90 degrees Sunday. On Sunday, some scattered thunderstorms will move through Northern Michigan as a cold front comes through. The cold front will knock down the temperatures and the humidity on Monday.
