WHITTEMORE, Mich.– The Whittemore Speedway kicked off a new tradition Saturday.

The racetrack held its first–ever “Slush Race,” in which drivers make their laps on slippery pavement with poor visibility. In these conditions, the winner is whoever completes the most laps in 90 minutes.

Track president Derek Moe said slush races aren’t about speed, but skill and reaction. Drivers need to keep a level head to manage whatever traction they can get. However, low speeds don’t equate with a lack of excitement. Saturday saw a spinout and overturn, though nobody was hurt.

Over 40 drivers competed in the race, and Moe said crowd turnout was strong.

Moe said he looks forward to bringing the slush race back next year.
