Spectrum Health medical residents post disturbing images

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Some Grand Rapids medical residents are being investigated after posting organs and tissue publicly on Instagram.

According to the New York Times the Spectrum Health medical residents played games like The Price Is Right.  The game included the residents asking people to guess the weight of a surgically removed organ.  The post apparently showed at least one patient in the background.

Patient Advocate Senior Director Caitlin Donovan said people should keep in mind that most doctors come into their role because they are caregivers first.  Donovan said doctors take the Hippocratic Oath and adds that doing no harm also means taking care of a patient as a whole person.

Donovan has been in the field almost 15 years and said this type of behavior is not a trend.  She adds that providers are protective of their patients.

Donovan said your interaction should dictate whether or not you can trust your physician and if you feel something is unethical, contact patient advocates in your hospital.
