Smoke alarms save residents from destructive house fire

ALPENA, Mich – At 5:41 a.m. firefighters were notified by a passerby of a structure fire on the corner of Washington and  Lewis Street

It was reported that the firefight lasted approximately four hours but due to a smoke alarm alerting the four people inside, they made it out with no injuries.

Firefighters rescued two cats and sadly one perished while another escaped.

Community Risk Reduction Officer, Andy Marceau,  said the fire was so severe that the home has to be demolished.

Since January, Marceau  has seen an increase in fires but found no common cause.

Fire Chief ,Bill Forbush, credited working smoke alarms for saving lives and also stated how impressed he was with the drone used to help pinpoint areas of severe burn and hidden fire.

At this time the cause of the fire still remains under investigation
