Slightly warmer Wednesday; Showers likely Thursday

Early this morning, a new record low for May 12 was set at Alpena airport. The temperature got down to 22 degrees, breaking an 86-year-old record. The old record low for May 12 was 23 degrees set in 1934. High temperatures this afternoon reached the upper 40s in Alpena, some lower 50s were observed in Iosco and Ogemaw counties.

High pressure centered near the Upper Peninsula is providing mainly clear skies to our area. Once this high pressure system slides off to the east, winds will become out of the south and temperatures will get warmer tomorrow. A low pressure system currently located near the Montana-Idaho border will travel eastward and bring showers to Northeast Michigan on Thursday.

Low temperatures overnight will cool to the middle 20s. Morning temperatures will be in the lower to middle 30s with sunny skies. The afternoon is looking mostly sunny with highs around 55 degrees. Cloud cover will increase late-day, and evening temperatures will be in the middle 40s.

Looking at forecast rainfall for Thursday, most of Northeast Michigan can expect about 0.25 inches of rainfall. Some higher amounts will be possible south of M-72, getting up to 0.5 inches.

Wednesday will start sunny but end cloudy, and high temperatures will reach about 55 degrees. Thursday is looking damp, showers are very likely with highs in the upper 50s. Temperatures should warm to the middle 60s Friday afternoon with partly cloudy skies.
