Shipwrecks fall to Small Town Outlaws in first bout

The Small town Outlaws congratulate the Shipwreck Alley Rollers after a hard fought bout.

Alpena, Mich — Roller derby season officially got underway Saturday night when the Shipwreck Alley Rollers hosted the Small Town Outlaws. It was Alpena’s first bout of the season and took place at Northern Lights Arena.

The Shipwrecks fell behind early as Jam Carrey and Tabby Katasstrophe set the pace for the Outlaws and the bout. They were able to out-maneuver the Shipwrecks for much of the bout, though Alpena’s blockers stepped up their physicality in the second half to keep the Rollers competitive. The first half defecit turned out to be too much as the Kalkaska based Outlaws came away with the 188-117 win.

Alpena’s Hail Mary, Sirens Sea Pearls, and Dirty Bird showed a lot of improvement over last season and had some great Jams throughout the bout. The Rollers will also be without key blocker Red Zepplin who is recovering from surgery, but will stay involved as an official this season.

The Rollers will not have another home bout until June 8th.
