Salvation Army hits stumbling block

ALPENA, Mich. — The Salvation Army faced some hurdles with its end of the “Stuff the Bus” drive.

Every year, Alpena’s Salvation Army teams up with United Way to gather school supplies for kids during “stuff the bus.” While United Way runs the bus drop–off at Walgreens, Salvation Army sets up a drop box in the Walmart entrance.

Unfortunately the past two years have come up shorter than normal for the drop box. Major Prezza Morrison says this isn’t because people have gotten stingy, but because of a lack of visibility.

“We were not allowed to have people at the boxes to give out flyers and remind people to shop for items. And so, because we had no one there, we just had the boxes.”

Morrison says school supplies can be a tough expense for families in need. That’s why the Salvation Army will continue accepting donations at their church on 2nd Avenue throughout the month.

They plan to distribute supplies on August 25 and 26.
