Salvation Army accepting sign-ups for holiday support

ALPENA, Mich. — The Alpena Salvation Army is still taking sign–ups for holiday aid packages.

The SA office on 2nd Avenue will accept applicants for Christmas food boxes every Tuesday and Thursday until December 9. These boxes contain a week’s worth of food, plus the ingredients for a Christmas dinner. Recipients can also choose toys for their kids from the Army’s free holiday shop.

Major Prezza Morrison said the pandemic has affected everyone and that reaching out for help isn’t a sign of weakness.

“Please don’t feel that you’re lacking as a person because you come here. We want you to feel uplifted, knowing that we’re taking that stress [of providing for the holidays] off you and that you’re important enough for us to do this for you.”

Morrison said support like this ensures people don’t have to choose between bills and a family Christmas.

If you want to apply, just bring an ID and birth certificate and DHHS paperwork for your kids, if you have any. You’ll also need a 1-month proof of income. The office is open between 10 AM and 3 PM on the following dates:

November 18, 23, and 30.

December 2, 7, 9.
