ALPENA, MI. – Protestors gathered outside of the Alpena County Courthouse on Sunday joining a rally hosted by the Democratic Party of Alpena.

The protest was prompted by a leaked draft opinion of the us supreme court, which suggests that the majority is in favor of overturning Roe Vs. Wade which would give individual states the power to allow or prohibit abortion.

“Overturning Roe Vs. Wade is a direct assault on a constitutionally endowed right. This is a reminder that our freedoms are never guaranteed, are hard won, and very easily lost” said  Diane O’Connor, chair of the activist committee of the Democratic Party of Alpena.

Counter-protestors also gathered this afternoon. “We just want to speak up for the voices of the babies. We believe that abortion is wrong, we believe that it is murdering an innocent human being and that there are ways to take care of mothers and babies. There are crisis pregnancy centers and many people willing to adopt babies.” said Shaina Erickson, one of the counter-protestors.

After the leaked Supreme Court draft, Governor Whitmer called on congress to protect access to abortion for Michiganders.

If the court overturns Roe Vs. Wade, about half of the states are expected to ban abortion.
