Residents are urged to use caution during the holiday

ALPENA, Mich.— As the Fourth of July is quickly approaching, residents are advised to use caution when handling fireworks. If you plan to light up firecrackers and other celebratory devices make sure its on your own property.

According to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, many fire related incidents occur during the 4th involving property damage, injury and even death. Residents should always follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Make sure people and pets are out of range before launching fireworks and never attempt to relight fireworks that have already been used. Keep a bucket of water in case of a fire and do not allow children to play with fireworks.

Community Risk Reduction Officer Andy Marceau says, “The Alpena County Fire Department has handled fires relating to firework usage and hopes this year is incident free.”

Fireworks are permitted starting today until July 4th from 11am to 11:45pm in Alpena.
