Rainy through Tuesday midday; Cooler and drier Wednesday

Two waves of rain are pushing into our area. The first wave from the south is moving through our area this evening. The next round of rain will move in late tonight-tomorrow morning, it’ll be a wet start to the day Tuesday. Total rainfall amounts of 0.25-0.5 inches are expected, although 0.5-0.75 inches is possible south of M-72, from Harrisville to Grayling.

High temperatures today reached the lower and middle 70s across Northeast Michigan. Winds out of the southeast normally bring cooler temperatures to areas near the lakeshore. But cloud cover increased from southwest to northeast, so cloud cover increased first in spots that would typically get warmer. The combination of southeast winds and the increasing cloud cover brought similar daytime highs region-wide. Winds will shift out of the southwest tomorrow, bringing warmer temperatures to our area (for one day only).

Brisk winds and high waves have caused the National Weather Service to issue Beach Hazard Statements and Small Craft Advisories near the Lake Huron shoreline. Beach Hazard Statements, shown in light blue, are in effect for Alpena, Alcona, Iosco and Arenac counties until tomorrow afternoon. Small Craft Advisories, shown in light purple, focusing on wave heights about 5 ft and wind speeds 15-20 knots are in effect for the near-shore waters of Lake Huron until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

More activity has developed in the Tropical Atlantic — Tropical Storm Dorian has formed over the weekend, it is currently located near Barbados, and will travel toward the northwest. The cone represents a forecast for the center of the storm — rain, wind and high waves will expand beyond the storm’s center. Dorian is forecast to strengthen to a category 1 hurricane early Wednesday, as it tracks near Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The mountainous terrain of the Dominican Republic is forecast to make Dorian weaken back to a tropical storm late in the week. The current forecast path shows it approaching Florida over the weekend.

Overnight lows will remain mild, in the lower 60s with periods of rain. Tomorrow morning will start wet, then a drying trend will take over throughout the afternoon and evening. Southwest winds will likely push the temperature to a high near 80 degrees.

Tomorrow will start wet and end dry. Cooler temperatures will move in Wednesday, mostly cloudy skies are expected in the afternoon and high temperatures will reach the lower 70s. A better supply of sunshine is in store Thursday as high temperatures get close to 80 degrees.
