Rain changing to snow late Thursday

High temperatures today reached the middle 40s with mostly cloudy skies and light winds from the northeast. Tomorrow, slightly colder temperatures will move in provided by brisk winds out of the north circulating around a storm system’s center that will travel just east of our area.

Rain over the Ohio valley and snow over portions of the Midwest are joining forces, combining into one storm system. The center of the system will move northward — but to the east of Lake Huron. The storm’s path will help cold air from the north invade our area. All of Northeast Michigan should expect snow showers Thursday night, then drier weather on Friday.

Some snow showers are possible tonight over interior northern Michigan (close to and west of I-75). Combining tonight’s snowfall and tomorrow night’s snowfall, some places away from the shorelines could get 3 to 6 inches of snow, including areas of Montmorency and Oscoda counties. Near the Lake Huron shoreline, 1-3 inches of snow are possible Thursday night.

Mainly rain is expected tonight although a slushy rain/snow mix is possible for counties that are not adjacent to the Great Lakes. Rain is likely tomorrow morning and afternoon, it’ll be a wet Halloween day, then likely a white Halloween night. The changeover to snow will start in the late-afternoon near I-75 then gradually expand eastward, reaching the Lake Huron shoreline in the evening.

High temperatures will reach the lower 40s tomorrow, and the weather is looking messy from the late-afternoon through the nighttime hours as rain changes to snow. Snow showers should come to an end before sunrise on Friday, mostly cloudy skies are expected with highs in the lower 40s Friday afternoon. Scattered rain/snow mix is forecast for Saturday with a weak system coming out of the Upper Plains, precipitation amounts should remain light.
