Presque Isle District Library receives $15,000 grant

ROGERS CITY, Mich. — The Presque Isle District Library has received a grant for $15,084 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Only 10 out of 23 applicants were approved for the grant.

The funds will go towards their digitization of a historical collection called the “Presque Isle county Sesquicentennial digitization project”. Presque Isle will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the county next year.

The collection includes great lakes maritime and lumbering industry history, early homesteading, oral history recordings, and more. Director of the library, Amber Alexander says this project will take about a year to finish. “This is a year-long grant,” she said. We’re going to be hiring two interns to do the scanning of the material and that just goes along with the 150th anniversary.”

Project Director, Anne Belanger says they’re very grateful for the grant, as it’s more difficult to get them in Northeast Michigan. “We’re very grateful for the grant and we’re most appreciative because Northeast Michigan is an underserved area,” she said. “Receiving grants has always been challenging so we’re very thankful to the state and to the federal government for allowing us these funds.”

The library partnered with the Presque Isle County Historical Museum for this project.
