Potentially record cold early Tuesday; Warmer midweek

High temperatures around the state reached only 47 degrees in Alpena, 49 degrees in Grand Rapids and 37 degrees in Marquette. Winds out of the northwest are supplying cold temperatures, ahead of a high pressure system located over central Canada.

The high pressure system over central Canada will travel to the Mid-Atlantic coast by Wednesday. Once the high pressure system is off to our east, then winds will become out of the south and warmer temperatures will start to move in. The next chance of rain will come with a storm system currently affecting the Pacific Northwest which will travel across the Plains and head into Lower Michigan Thursday.

Except for the first three days of May, high temperatures so far this month have been well below normal. On average, highs for the first 11 days this month have been running 8 degrees below normal. The cold temperatures will continue overnight and tomorrow. Then some improvement will arrive Wednesday.

Overnight, low temperatures will drop close to record cold values. The forecast low early Tuesday is 23 degrees. The existing record is 23 degrees set in 1934.

Morning temperatures will be in the middle 30s with a mix of sun and clouds. Skies will become mostly sunny in the afternoon and high temperatures will get to around 50 degrees. The evening will be clear with temperatures in the upper 30s.

Tuesday will be bright and cool. Wednesday will start sunny, then clouds will increase in the evening, and high temperatures will reach about 56 degrees. Showers are likely Thursday with highs in the upper 50s. Temperatures are expected to warm to the 60s Friday.
