Alpena — Cinema at the Sanctuary returns this Thursday night with the popular environmental documentary “Chasing Coral.”

The film looks at the depreciation of coral reefs all over the world. It took three years to film and over 500 hours of underwater footage. The film was directed by Jeff Orlowski and produced by Larissa Rhodes.

“Chasing Coral” will not only highlight this month’s film, but it will also highlight another event happening this week in Alpena.

“On September 11, we start the 30 days of peace and their theme is caring for the earth, so for the “Chasing Coral” film, it will be one of their featured events,” said Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Katie Wolf.

The film was recognized at Sundance Film Festival as an audience award winner. The documentary is also in the running for a pair of Emmy Awards.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, and the film starts at 7. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary website https://thunderbay.noaa.gov/
