Police looking out for Alpena voters

ALPENA, Mich.– In advance of November 3, Alpena’s police are keeping their eyes and ears open to make sure political tension doesn’t boil over on election day.

According to Alpena County Sheriff Steve Kieliszewski, the Michigan State Police provide information to counties about potential risks such as extremist groups. The sheriff also stays in touch with the county clerk, who hears from the Bureau of Elections. Currently, neither agency is reporting any risks for elections in Alpena, though Kieliszewski says he will be keeping his ears open.

He also says to reach out to the police if you are feeling unsafe at your polling place on election day.

“Contact Central Dispatch, especially if they’re feeling threatened. So 911 would be the appropriate call. If it’s for any other purposes, then use the non–emergency number to Central Dispatch, which is 354–9111. If they’re outside the polling place, they can certainly make those phone calls.”

Voters are also encouraged to let poll workers know if they feel unsafe. poll workers have access to police radios in case of emergencies.
