ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena residents of all ages met in the fresh palate loft Monday night for the first–ever poetics workshop.

Co–founders Mitchel Dipzinski and Dominique Witten based the program off of an earlier version they developed while they were students at the university of Michigan.

Each session is a week long and participants meet every evening to explore themselves through poetry and think critically about language itself.

Witten told WBKB that what she enjoys most about poetry is its ability to help people open up.

“Just, being able to meet people in this vulnerable space where you can’t really hide in poems. Like, the “I” doesn’t have to be you in a poem, but it could be you. Or it could be someone else you’ve met along your journey.”

The first session wraps up this Saturday evening with an open-mic night. You can sign up to attend open-mic here.
