ALPENA, Mich. — Paid parking may finally be coming to downtown Alpena, it’s an issue that has been discussed for a long time. Executive director of Alpena’s Downtown Development Authority, Anne Gentry, says with this new source of income, they would be able to build a new parking structure.
“You know right now we cant afford to do a lot of parking improvements or even maintenance of the parking lots, but if we had that money that will allow us to build a garage, better snow removal, to really benefit people that come downtown,” she said.
As of right now, no final decisions have been made, but Gentry also says most of the board agree there are issues with parking that need to be addressed. “You know our board as a whole hasn’t taken an official vote, but we’re all seeing that we need to address parking issues and we need parking and this seems to be the next logical step to get more. I think right now we’re on the path to its what we’re going to do, but we’re not sure of what the timeline might be of it.”
Parking meters would likely be installed and would accept cash, apple pay, and credit and debit cards.
