Oscoda’s Rayes named Class C recipient for MHSAA scholar-athlete award

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) selected 10 student-athletes from Class C member schools to receive scholarships through the MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award program. All 10 recipients will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.

One of those recipients is Oscoda’s Sophia Rayes. Throughout high school, she ran three seasons of cross country and will participate in her third season of track and field this spring. In both sports, she earned all–league recognition. What’s even more impressive is her hard work in the classroom. Rayes’ currently duel-enrolling at Oscoda high school and at Alpena Community College. Her grade point average at both schools is a 4.0.

“It means my hard work has really paid off,” said Rayes. “I wasn’t expecting to get this. When I found out that I got this, I was absolutely astounded. I couldn’t of asked for anything better. The recognition is just awesome.”

This fall, Rayes will be attending the University of Michigan to study Secondary English Education.
