One Local Group Holds an Emergency Preparedness Seminar

With so many natural disasters, weather changes, and active shooter situations going on around the nation and the world, the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints decided to come together to host an Emergency Preparedness Class.

Tornados, shootings, car accidents, you never know what type of situation you may find yourself in one day. That’s why the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will be hosting an Emergency Preparedness Fair for the public to attend.

“It’s free, we want everyone to come and learn how to survive any disaster that might be in this area.” Coordinator, Karen Blackhurst said.

Living in Michigan you can face some cruel winter months, that’s why survival kits will be presented at the event.

“If your car quits on you, and your on a rural road it doesn’t take very long for you to get really, really cold.”

There will also be presentations on natural disasters, and active shooter situations. Co–coordinator, Rose Marie Guthrie said being surrounded by Lake Huron this is also a way to plan just in case of a flood.

“Here in Northeast Michigan we’re surrounded by water. We should be developing a plan. Perhaps an evacuation plan or some type of plan to approach these disasters, so that we don’t succumb to them,” Guthrie noted.

Being involved in an active shooter situation, Guthrie said Saturday’s event would also be a time to not only plan, but also share personal experiences.

“I was in an active shooter situation in 1999 out west. I was in a library and I remember crawling to the bookshelves and there was something’s that I wouldn’t want to see happen again.

I think there are ways to prevent them that I’d like to share with people that are interested,” she said.

The group will be not only be speaking on kits, and education, there will be door prizes, survival food sampling and more.

One great thing about the survival kits is that they can be collected locally. So if you haven’t made any weekend plans, the Emergency Preparedness Fair will be held on Saturday from 11 am until 3 pm, at the Family History Center located at 411 Long Rapids Plaza.
