No minimum wage increase for Michigan in 2021

LANSING, Mich. – The probability of Michigan minimum wage workers getting a pay raise as planned for January 1st, 2021 is no longer. The news comes due to high unemployment, rates according to state regulators. The Michigan Workforce Opportunity Wage Act of 2018 set up a schedule of minimum wage increases that included January of 2021, but the law includes a provision that no minimum wage increases are allowed on January 1st, following a year with an annual average unemployment rate of 8.5 percent or higher. State regulators say they doubt the annual rate will fall by December 31st. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics will calculate Michigan’s final annual unemployment rate. With no increase in 2021, most Michigan workers earning minimum wage will earn around $9.65.
