ALPENA, Mich. — The Michigan DNR is inviting the public to participate in their annual winter free fishing weekend. Whether they have their fishing license or not, everyone will be allowed to drop a line in the water this Saturday and Sunday. This event is an effort to promote Michigan’s world-class fishing opportunities.
The DNR is also removing the need for a recreation passport, which is normally required for vehicle entries at state parks, boating access sites, and other state–managed outdoor recreation destinations. There are several organized events happening across the state. The closest one to alpena is winter–fest at the rifle river recreation area located in Lupton. They plan to host hayrides, ice fishing, snow shoeing and more.
