New Welcome Signs to Appear in Alpena

The Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce will help Alpena open its arms even wider to visitors, with brand new welcome signs that will give people a taste of what our local community is all about.

The welcome signs will soon be placed in three different locations in Alpena, thanks to the success of Alpenopoly. The Alpena–themed monopoly board games have been sold at the Chamber of Commerce for the past few months to raise money for the project, and enough funds have finally been raised to make the signs a reality. Each welcome sign is designed with the local flavor of our community in mind.

“They were designed very specifically to represent Alpena, so they’ll be built on concrete and boulders, kind of like the limestone that you see at the break wall. So it will represent that industry in our community,” says Chamber President Jackie Krawczak.

The signs will also boast of our maritime heritage, with a design around the boarder resembling rivets on the hull of a ship. Thanks to the sale of roughly 500 game boards, as well as private donations from individuals, the chamber was able to purchase the three signs, which cost an estimated $36,000.

Chamber president Jackie Krawczak says she’s excited to see the signs go up, and hopes they contribute to the tourism destination vibe in our community.

“They’re going to be pretty massive structures and they’re really going to stand out. I think they’ll actually be a place where people stop and want to take pictures,” she adds.

The 8 feet by 10 feet steel signs will be going up in the next few weeks. They’ll appear on sections of US–23 north, US–23 south and M–32.
