ROGERS CITY, Mich.– Rogers City received a new water filter Friday.

A crew installed the new prototype filter in front of an eager crowd Friday afternoon.

The filter, produced by S & A Company, is designed to catch remaining plastic debris that might otherwise run into the lake.

The Michigan Department of Transportation and Great Lakes: Great Responsibility, an environmental non–profit, collaborated on the project.

GL:GR founder Meagen Schwartz said she hopes to see the results of the filter soon.

“This filter in Rogers City is adjacent to the beach next to the marina. So, we’re hoping it will have some really clear and profound impacts in terms of preventing litter from entering the lakes.”

S & A designed the filter to catch spillover in the ditch, with a net catching remaining debris from the main water flow.

Schwartz said she hopes to work with MDOT to install more filters in the future.

This was a big step forward for GL:GR, which is less than a year old.
