New law assists firefighters and first responders

ALPENA, Mich.– Governor Whitmer signed a new bill into law that puts Michigan firefighters first.

Firefighters typically jump out of their trucks in a hurry to save lives, but this time someones looking out for them.

The new bill amends the worker’s disability compensation act to include part–time, on–call and volunteer firefighters for coverage under the first responder presumed coverage fund.

Now all Michigan firefighters can receive cancer treatments benefits if needed.

“We are two times more likely to get cancer as a fire fighter, with all the carcinogens and things that are in the smoke and the fire when it happens.”

While it took some time for the bill to officially be signed into law, Michigan first responders have patiently waited for the care they needed to arrive.

“We hear about it at our union functions about how they want to give us the coverage, it just took the time and the effort of all the legislature and the support.”

The new bill also extends coverage to retirees who need. But one things for sure….

“We hope we never have to use it, to be honest with you, the goal is we don’t ever have to use it, but the reality is someone’s going to have to use it and it not only covers you when you’re working, but when you retire.
