LANSING, Mich. — Governor Whitmer today announced  an update to the Department of Health and Human Services’ epidemic order allowing contact sports in high schools to resume practice and competition.

Beginning on Feb. 8, high school athletes participating in contact sports will be able to resume participation with safety measures in place. These measures include mask wearing when possible during practice and competitions and regular testing of student athletes.

“We continue to make progress in reducing cases and hospitalizations, helping protect our families and frontline workers and saving lives,” said Gov. Whitmer. “Now, starting February 8, contact sports can resume with safety measures in place.”

“We are pleased at our continued progress in Michigan that has allowed us to take this step forward in a phased approach,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive and chief deputy for health at MDHHS. “As a parent and former student-athlete myself, I get how important athletics are to our children’s physical and mental health.”
