Alpena — An invoice scam is circling the nation that deals with high school athletic programs, and that scam has made it’s way to the Sunrise Side.

A company called Sports Media Advertising has been trying to solicit funds falsely through letters on behalf of high school athletics programs.

Alpena High School has been one of the schools affected. Two businesses in the Alpena area have received invoices.

“It’s going to a third party, ” said Alpena High School Athletic Director Tim Storch. “In this case, the company their using is Sports Media, but there is a few other names that they use to, so we ask the community to be very vigilant, if they’re suspicious, please let us know, and again we appreciate all of the support they [businesses] gives us, and we hate to see anybody taken advantage of.”

The high school athletics program wants to make it known that when they do have fundraising request they will never ask for a credit card number or bank account. All requests come as a letter stating the purpose from the athletic director.

if your business receives an invoice please contact your local police department or the high school listed on the invoice.
