MLK Committee of Alpena extends deadline for annual essay contest

ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena junior and senior high school students have a chance to win up to $200.  The Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Alpena is accepting entries for their annual essay contest celebrating the work of the Civil Rights icon.

 Guidelines

Essay entries will be divided into two groups, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12.

The essay prizes will be $200 for first place and $100 for second place for each group.

The winners may be asked to read their essays on on a date to be determined in January 2021.

Guidelines

  • Essays for grades 6-8 must be from 300-500 words.
  • Essays for grades 9-12 must be from 500-800 words.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a Beloved Community where….

  • International disputes would be resolved by peaceful conflict-resolution and reconciliation
  • Love and trust would triumph over fear and hatred
  • Peace with justice would prevail over war and military conflict
  • Poverty, hunger and homelessness would not be tolerated
  • Racism, discrimination, bigotry and prejudice would be replaced by a spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood

The essay question to address is:

What can you do in your community to aid in the development of the Beloved Community?

 

  • All essays must be an original work.
  • Save essays as a WORD document attached to an email message. Send essays to MLKEssay2021@gmail.com
  • Clearly label entries with the author’s full name, age author’s full name, age, grade in school, name of school mailing address, phone number, and word count.
  • Submit essays by Monday, Jan. 4, 2021
  • The MLK Committee will contact winners.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Alpena will judge essays for the local area.
