Michigan’s Severe Weather Awareness Week runs through Saturday

ALPENA, Mich. — Michigan’s Severe Weather Awareness runs this week until Saturday, March 27 to remind residents that severe weather season is approaching.

This includes tornadoes, flooding, high winds, and other weather patterns that could disrupt our daily lives.

“We work with the National Weather Service to determine the best time of year to do this,” said Michigan State Police Officer Dale George. “We’re moving into springtime, where we tend to see more severe weather.”

George works with MSP’s Emergency Management and Homeland Securities Division. He says that now is the time families should be having conversations and making preparation plans for possible emergencies.  These preparations wouldn’t only be helping the families that are planning ahead, too.

“If you and your family are prepared, it frees up those first responders to help those who may not be prepared,” George said. “They may not be prepared for several reasons.”

During Severe Weather Awareness week, Michigan is putting on a Statewide Tornado Drill being conducted on March 24 at 1 p.m.
