Michigan Department of Treasury warns tax payers of scam

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Treasury warns Michigan tax payers with past–due tax debts to be aware of an aggressive scam making its rounds through the United States Postal Service.

In the scam, taxpayers receive a letter about their overdue tax bill, asking them to call a toll–free number to resolve the issue.  The letter aggressively threatens to seize the taxpayers property which includes bank accounts, wages, business assets, real estate and cash if the debt is not settled.

Deputy State Treasurer Ann Good said over the last week they have seen an uptick in reports of taxpayers receiving these letters.  Good added if you have questions about your taxes, to contact the treasury’s collections service center at 517–636–5265.
