Michigan creates bipartisan task force for juvenile justice reform

LANSING, Mich. — Governor Whitmer created the very first task force in Michigan dedicated to juvenile justice reform on Wednesday morning.

Through an executive order, Gov. Whitmer and Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist formed the task force that will focus on analyzing the juvenile justice system and recommending proven practices to improve the lives of youth.

“Our goal is to improve outcomes for youth while enhancing public safety and aligning our state policies and practices with what we know works,” Whitmer said. “The task force that we are forming will review and build on a lot of efforts that are already underway in counties across our state.”

Whitmer said criminal justice reform has been a day-one priority for her administration. The task force will include law enforcement, the advocacy community, juvenile defense experts and government officials.
