Michigan auto insurance reform offers relief for millions of drivers

ALPENA, Mich. — Michigan’s new auto insurance law goes into effect today.  The new law makes auto insurance more affordable by giving drivers the choice to opt out of personal injury protection altogether or by lowering their PIP limit.  Industry experts encourage motorists to carefully weigh all their options before making a change to their auto insurance policy.

“You certainly want to educate yourself on what the risks are potentially by choosing a lower PIP limit or lower liability limits,” said Quintin Meek, an account executive with the Lappan Agency in Alpena.

Under the new law, drivers will now be able to choose from up to six different options for personal injury protection coverage.

“What are your insurance costs?  Understand that if you do nothing. you will still see some savings,” said Meek. “The other things to evaluate are your liabilities. Do you have a house, a couple cars?  All of these things can come into play when you think about a liability scenario,” he said.
