ALPENA, Mich. — In anticipation of this Friday’s debate at Alpena Community College, we’re introducing you to the candidates you’ll see on stage. First on the list: attorney Matthew DePerno.

Matthew DePerno is a tax and business litigation attorney who’s worked in the field for nearly 30 years. He earned his degrees from University of Detroit Mercy and New York university’s school of law.

DePerno said he became a lawyer to fight against what he called “abusive practices” by the IRS.

“[They were] not following the rules, not following the taxpayer bill of rights, and not following the constitution. That’s what interested me at that time.”

He gained national attention in 2020 for his involvement in the Antrim County election lawsuit, in which he made multiple allegations of voter fraud against Dominion Voting Systems. Multiple fact checkers, news organizations, and public officials have since debunked these claims.

DePerno said he wants to take on the role of Attorney General to end what he calls Dana Nessel’s “corrupt” administration.

“She uses her office as a sledge hammer against the opposition party. That tells me she’s a person that doesn’t care about the Constitution.”

In his free time, DePerno said he enjoys fly–fishing and spending time with his family.

He’ll be on stage this Friday at Alpena Community College for a debate with two other primary candidates
