MDOT responds to concerns about US 23 construction

ALPENA, Mich. — The construction set to take place on US-23 in the spring of 2021 has many business owners in Harrisville concerned about how this will impact their establishments.  We spoke with a representative from the Michigan Department of Transportation who explained their plan of action.

The construction on US-23 is scheduled to begin in April of 2021 and be completed at the beginning of July before the holiday weekend.  Many residents and business owners are concerned about how this would further impact them on top of the recent COVID–19 pandemic.

According to MDOT’s Communication Representative James Lake, he has heard the concerns of the Harrisville community but says this project was planned five years ago.  Lake explained that this five million dollar project would normally take from April to October but they have condensed it.  He also says he understands the inconvenience and explains their plans for road accessibility.

Lake added that US-23 is an important regional route but they can no longer continue with minor fixes.

He further explained the importance of the reconstruction and said he understands the inconvenience and hopes that their plans to minimize the construction will be less disruptive to businesses.
