Man in critical condition after shooting himself, failing to comply with deputies

ALPENA, Mich. — A man is last reported in critical condition after shooting himself in the head Sunday night while failing to comply with Alpena County Sheriff Deputies.

The Sheriff’s Office says that around 9:30 p.m., they responded to a call of a possible domestic dispute in progress at 4026 U.S-23 South. Upon arrival, deputies were confronted by a man with a handgun who told deputies not to move closer.

The man then put the gun in his mouth, failed to comply when ordered to drop the weapon, entered his vehicle and left the scene. The subject was pursued but deputies were unable to locate him. Officials returned to the scene of the crime to speak with the victims and witnesses, when the man returned.

Officials say the man left his vehicle with the gun in hand. Deputies ordered him to drop the weapon, but the subject failed to comply. Again, he put the gun in his mouth, this time to lay on the ground and pull the trigger.

Deputies secured the gun and immediately performed CPR. The subject was transported to Mid-Michigan Hospital where he was last reported in critical condition.

The identity of the suspect is not being released by the Sheriff’s Office at this time.
