Low-income college students to receive food assistance

ALPENA, Mich. – Michigan Department of Health and Human Services along with the Labor and Economic Opportunity have partnered to aid Michigan students as they battle food shortages.

Earlier this week it was announced that approximately 90,000 low–income college students in Michigan enrolled in career or technical education programs will be eligible to receive food assistance benefits through the state of Michigan’s new initiative.

According to Director at MDHHS, Robert Gordon, hunger was a problem for students prior to COVID–19 and has now become more of a challenge.

This policy change will help thousands of students in the way of them no longer needing to choose between dropping out of school and getting critical food aid.

Additionally, it will help Michigan students become more competitive economically as the economy recovers.
