Alpena — Last year was the first time in decades that a competitive gymnastics competition was held in Alpena.

This weekend, Alpena AAU Gymnastic is hosting another meet at the APlex with teams coming from all over Michigan. These are some of the best young gymnasts in the state. The middle school and high school lady gymnasts will show off their routines and skills in competitions featuring the bars, beams, vaults, and floor. The team is hoping for a large turnout and community support for a successful meet.

“Gymnastics hasn’t been around for a long time, and so a lot of people don’t know what it really consists of or what it’s all about, so I’ve had people come to the gym during practice and say “wow!” said Head Coach Geri Samp. “I didn’t realize the things you were doing here, so it’s just great to have the community see how hard these girls work.”

The girls have been working hard and competing together for years. Jamie Beaubin is participating in her third competition this weekend. She’s excited to show the community what shes been working on before the big competition.

“It definitely brings up your confidence to see that so many people want to see you do gymnastics and see you do your best,” said Gymnast Jamie Beaubin.

Over 60 gymnasts will take the stages on Saturday. The first division of athletes will start at 12:45 P.M. and the more advanced division kicks off at 4:45 P.M. Admission is $5.
