Local skater honored in unique way

ALPENA, Mich. — For Alpena figure skater Miya Ayala, her senior year did not end the way as planned. She was hoping to skate in front of her family and friends one more time, but thanks to COVID-19 she won’t get that opportunity.

Miya has been skating for the past nine years so it is safe to say that she is good at what she does best. During her nine years, Miya has won numerous times for the Wildcats which includes placing second at districts.

Miya was awarded the Elroy Downing Award, which is the highest award given out by the Alpena Figure Skating Club. There was one problem, she couldn’t accept the award because of the pandemic. So her family planned a parade outside of Northern Lights Arena, which gave Maya’s family and friends to congratulate her.

“I have been thinking about winning this award since I started skating,” said Ayala.

This upcoming fall, Miya will attend Western Michigan University to study Forensic Anthropology.
