Local hunters are encouraged to help keep healthy deer herds

ALPENA, Mich.—It’s not uncommon to see deer walking around these parts of Michigan. The Quality Deer Management Association is encouraging hunters to help keep healthy herds going into the fall season.

The QDMA Northeast Michigan branch is a local organization educating hunters on managing whitetail deer populations through various outlets. Despite the cancellations of annual events and monthly meetings this year, the association is advising hunters to monitor herd management through restricting the harvest of young bucks and to always maintain nutritious food plots.

A balanced diet keeps deer in good health and lowers bovine tuberculosis numbers among the deer population.

QDMA President Irvin Timm said, “He has seen positive results when those regulations are followed.”

The association banquet is cancelled for 2021.
